This post may take the form of a rant as I try and describe the experience I had yesterday talking with a representative from a large (the largest) Christian university.
He was trying to get me to apply for the school, and I politely declined, saying that my parents were not letting me attend and I had already chosen a secular university. He kept pressuring me, and even told me that I had to choose between God and my family. Hm. Last time I checked, your university is not God.
Not only that, but he said that ALL of his friends who attended a secular university walked away from God - even though they were worship leaders and highly involved in the church. He warned me that if I didn't choose a Christian university, I would end up like them. Hm. I'm pretty sure God can keep me safe because He is strong enough to do that.
Anyways, I was furious...I know that he was just trying to get me to go to his university, but as a Christian, his first responsibility should be to encourage his fellow sister in Christ. I did not get that from him.
I realize that it will be hard next year, but I also need to trust in God. He is the One who is sending me there - He's got a plan for me, and that includes UofT. God needs lights to shine for Him all around the world - not just in Christian universities.

oooh. I know which univeristy you speak of. I know a guy who went there .. very amazing musician and worship leader. Though, I agree .. I dont think it was fair of that representitive to have been like that.
I spoke with the guys of Redemmer Uni and College and they were soo sweet!
I really hate when Christians do that. I'd have to agree with you. Although I do go to a Christian University, I do know that even if you don't, your faith in God's strength will get you through it with an even stronger relationship than before.
I do know how hard it is though, to be a minority of religion in a school, so if you ever want to talk or have encouragement next year, just send me a message on fb or something.
You inspire my very walk with Christ when I see how dedicated to Him you are. Thank you.

Hi Claudia,
Our daughter goes to a secular university: Furman.
She is a sophomore this year.
Our family loves the Lord very much, and we believe it was His will for her to go there.
She had a rough time her first semester. It drove her into the arms of God, not away from them.
We know she loves the Lord and knows the truth for this is the way we have raised her.
She has found a wonderful Christian roommate (they were suitemates last year) and we thank God for her, too, she has become another daughter for me, and in fact calls me "mom", which warms my heart so much!
She and our daughter are witnesses there for our Lord.
So will you be, where you are going.
I am sorry you got spoken to like you did. It has happened to us, too. Sift the words. Keep the wisdom and let the rest blow away.
Hugs, sugar!

If the guy had stopped to ask you a few questions, he would have learned that you had wrestled long and hard with this decision and you feel like you are doing what God wants you to do. So while there may have been some truth to what he said, you are right in your decision. If you're feeling brave, you might want to write to his school to let them know that their recruiter is being over zealous and offended you. Chances are if he bothered you, he may have bothered someone else.
